CHARLES DARWIN ( 1809 - 1882)
The English Naturalist Charles Darwin is celebrated for his theory of Evolution by Natural selection. This theory was published in Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection (1859) and argues that the individual members of a Species very naturally in their characteristics. Those members that are best adjusted to their environment will survie in the greatest numbers to reproduce and pass on their characteristics to the next generation. Over many generations, therefore, the species as a whole will evolve, becoming better adapted to its environment. Darwin's theory, often simplified as "the survival of the fittests", was held to apply equally to the evolution of human beings.
